ITS4U STUDENT-S Network Registration

Fairfield University Student User Registration

ITS4U requires each Student to verify that their PC meets the established network policies prior to connecting to the network.

1) System Software Up-To-Date (Windows and Mac OS X Operating Systems)

2) Antivirus Software Installed & Virus Definitions Up-To-Date

Note: See Instructions and Information Below Regarding your Operating System before proceeding.

You must use your NetID (i.e. John.Smith) & Password to Register
  • If you have forgotten your password or if it has expired, please go to the NetID Manager to reset it.

  • If you are unable to reset it, CALL the Help Desk at (203) 254-4069 or Visit the ITS4U Help Desk in the library.

Please See Information below to verify that you have met the Network Requirements.
Then enter your NetID and password to begin the Begin Network Registration button.

Updating the Operating System

Applies to Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8

  1. Select the Start button or Windows Key and do a Search for Windows Update to access it or go to Microsoft Update
  2. In the left pane, Select Check for updates, and then wait while Windows checks for new updates.
  3. If Important Updates are available, select all the important updates, then Select Install Updates
Notes:
Some updates may require you to restart your computer to finish installing.
Save and close all your programs before restarting to prevent data loss.
After restarting, please Repeat Step #2 to see that there are no more Important Updates to Install.

Installing Antivirus/Updating Virus Definitions

ITS prefers Microsoft Security Essentials if you do not have an Antivirus installed
  1. Go to Microsoft Security Essentials
  2. Click "Download Now" and Run the Installer
  3. Once installed, open the application, and Click "Update" to update the virus definitions

Ready to Register (Download Bradford)

Bradford is a Dissolvable Agent that ONLY checks your system to verify that it meets the Network Requirements

  1. Enter your NetID & Password (For Students) or First & Last Name (For Visitors). Then click Begin Network Registration.
  2. Run the Application when prompted. Check your Downloads Folder if not prompted.
  3. The Bradford Agent will take approx. 1-2 min to check your system.
  4. Once finished, you will be brought to a Success Page if your computer meets the Network Standards. If not, the Failure Page will inform you of the Reason for Failure.

Mac OS X

Applies to Mac OS X 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 & above

  1. Choose Apple in the Apple menu > Software Update – If prompted, enter an admin name and password or Go to Updating OS X
  2. Note: The App Store opens and displays any software updates available for OS X and will be at the top of the list
  3. Click "Update All" to install all available software updates or "Update" to install individual software updates. If prompted, enter an admin name and password, then Apple ID and password.
Notes:
Some updates might require that you restart your computer to finish installing. Save and close all your programs before restarting to prevent data loss. After restarting, please check to see that there are no more Important Updates to Install.

Installing Antivirus & Updating Virus Definitions

ITS prefers ClamXav if you do not have any Antivirus
  1. Go to ClamXav and click Download.
  2. Once Downloaded, double-click the ClamXav.app in your Downloads folder
  3. At this point, you may or may not be prompted to install the ClamAV scanning engine. If so, click "Install" and follow the onscreen instructions. Once the installer has finished, double click ClamXav.app again.
  4. Once opened, click 'Update Definitions" to update the virus definitions for the application.

Ready to Register (Download Bradford)

Linux

Linux Operating Systems are unable to be registered via the normal registration process.

Please Call the ITS4U Help Desk at (203) 254-4069 to be manually added to the STUDENT-S Network.

When you call, please have the Mac Address for your computer ready.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. When I clicked Begin Network Registration, a message said, "Login Failed: Authetication Failure" What does this mean?

  • You have entered your NetID Password incorrectly or it has expired. Please try again, if it does not work, please go to the NetID Manager to reset it.

2. I have Windows XP or Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and can't register, what do I do?

  • As of July 1st 2014, Information Technology Services no longer allows these operating systems on the Network to maintain the integrity of the Network since Microsoft & Apple have discontinued security updates and support. 
  • You would need to upgrade to at least Vista on Windows and upgrade to at least 10.7 (Lion) on Mac OS X depending if your computer has the hardware comptability to upgrade. 
  • You can contect the ITS4U Help Desk regarding upgrading for additional information or assistance.

3.I have a Windows RT computer, do I need Antivirus?

  • Windows RT computers are actually tablets and do not need Antivirus like other computer and can be registered as a Mobile Device.t 

4. How do I know if I have Antivirus Installed?

  • On Windows, go to Start, Control Panel, Programs, and then Program and Features: Look for a program such as Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, Security Essentials to see if it is installed.
  • On Mac OS X, go to Finder and then Applications folder: Look for a program such as Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, Clam X AV to see if it is installed.

5. I already have Antivirus (i.e. Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, etc) do I still need to download your preferred Antivirus program?

  • No. You will only have to update your Antivirus program's Virus Definitions

6. How do I update my Antivirus Program's Virus Definitions?

  • Open the antivirus application and look for a Option or Button that genereally says "Update", "Update Now", or "Update Definitions.

7. What does it mean when I failed to register my device on the STUDENT-S Network?
You have Failed to Meet the University PC Requirements  for the following reasons:

  • Operating System Updates Not Up-To-Date (Applies to Windows and Mac OS X)
  • Antivirus Application Not Installed (Applies to Windows and Mac OS X)
  • Antivirus Application Virus Definitions Not Up-To-Date
